Let’s go bear hunting!

Many groups of bear hunters from the mountains migrate to eastern North Carolina for the December bear season.

Bear hunting in eastern North Carolina is one of the most-exhilarating experiences a hunter can have. Unlike most other types of hunting, bear hunting is a group effort that requires good hunters and good land, but people that want to start bear hunting cannot just go out and buy some hounds and begin hunting. It takes substantial training for the dogs and the hunters.

Zach Lancaster, a veteran bear hunter with access to dogs, stays on the lookout for hunt clubs that have members interested in chasing bears. He will team up with members of deer-hunting clubs to facilitate bear hunts during the December season.

“It is always a fun time for everybody. We always encourage the club members to participate, and any treed bear, the club members always get the first opportunity to take the first shot,” he said.
