Rev. Wade Hall Jr., pastor of the Elizabethtown Church of God, hunts raccoons at least three nights a week to keep his dogs in top form for competition, and he often takes young people along.
Some of the proceeds from the Lumber River Outdoors/True Vine Coon Club youth hunt went to youth programs at his church.
During the hunt, youngsters went out with adult hunters who had coonhounds. If an adult in the party took a raccoon, the youngster took possession of it for the contest. The weight of the raccoon was the deciding factor for first-, second- and third-place prizes. In parties that had more than one youngster, the group used a lottery to determine which raccoon went to each hunter.
Prizes were awarded based on heaviest weights in descending order.
The winners were siblings, with Tucker Jackson’s raccoon weighing 7 pounds, 7 ounces. His brother, Kaleb, brought in a 7-pound, 6-ounce raccoon, and sister Halie took third with a 6-pound, 9-ounce raccoon.
