61 billfish released on Day 2 of 2023 Big Rock

It was another big day for anglers competing on Day 2 of the 65th Annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament. With 254 of the 271 boats competing on Day 2, anglers released a total of 61 billfish including 54 blue marlin, two white marlin, and five sailfish.

The $5000 first release of the day went to ANN WARRICK, who got off to a quick start, releasing a blue marlin just after 9:30 a.m.

Two blue marlin were brought to the scales, with only one meeting the tournament minimum. SEA TOY’s 463.7-pound blue marlin made it into second place on the leaderboard, with C-STUDENT still sitting in first place with their Day 1 catch of 470.2 pounds.

That means the Fabulous Fisherman prize, which goes to the first team to boat a marlin weighing at least 500 pounds, of $739,500 is still up for grabs heading into Day 3.

In the Billfish Release Category, GRAND SLAM released three blue marlin, pocketing $44,625. The day’s catch also put them in the overall lead, where they could earn another $133,875 in prize money, if they finish at the top. WAVE PAVER, which sat in second place in this category at the end of Day 1, stayed in the same position after adding another blue marlin release on Day 2. REEL QUICK moved up two slots and currently sits in third place.

The Non-sonar Daily Release prize of $32,229 went to RETRIEVER, now sitting in second place overall in that category.

A 59.3-pound dolphin worth $2000 put SKIP HOOK in the overall lead for that category, which has a payout of $539,750

The first tuna of the tournament was weighed on Day 2, by HIGH YIELD. Their 42.8-pound tuna was good for $2000 and the overall lead. A 36.6-pound tuna was good for $1000 for REEL LOVE and the second place overall spot on the tuna leaderboard.

Youth angler Kelson Daniels currently sits at the top of the Junior Dolphin category. Fishing aboard the WASTE KNOT, he weighed a 13.9-pound mahi on Day 2.
