Myrtle Beach boat crash leaves one dead, driver arrested

A boating accident at Santee killed one man last Thursday night.

28-year-old Corey Parag was killed in crash

The SCDNR arrested John Kody Ray of Surfside Beach earlier this week after his involvement in a fatal boat crash. The 27-year-old was allegedly driving the boat. He has been charged with boating under the influence of alcohol resulting in a death. He also faces two counts of violating boating rules and regulations.

Ray, who investigators say was driving the boat at the time of the crash, wrecked the boat into the ramp of a floating dock on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway Sunday night, April 11, 2021.

A total of five people were in the boat. Corey Parag of Myrtle Beach was killed. One other passenger suffered significant injuries, and the other passengers had minor injuries.

According to Horry County court records, Ray was convicted in 2018 and again in 2020 of driving with an open container of alcohol in the car.

Ray’s bond has been set at $21,000 and his next court appearance is scheduled for August. An autopsy for Parag is set to take place Friday.
