Besides the tackle in his boat, guide Steve Pietrykowski points to his electronics as the most-important thing he takes to the lake on every trip.
“Buy good electronics and learn to use them to their fullest,” he said. “Know your graph and how to read it.”
Electronics can pinpoint the location of Lake Hartwell’s stripers, hybrids and baitfish and enable anglers to put their baits in just the right places, at the right depths.
Companies like Lowrance, Humminbird, Garmin, Furuno, Raymarine and Simrad all produce excellent units with features including touch screen, down-scan, side-scan, GPS, track-back, and many can handle mapping software. It’s really a matter of what features you need and what your bank account can stand.
Basics in today’s market include a minimum of depth-finding, GPS, sonar and map-uploading.
“Screen size is a preference thing” Pietrykowski said. “Depth and a GPS unit (are needed), topographical features are also a plus”.
The use of the GPS has altered the way many people fish by allowing you to mark places to within a few feet.
Owning a good marine electronic device is great, but money is wasted if anglers don’t learn to use all of their features.
