At night, GPS units are doubly important

Marking waypoints and tracks during the day will make fishing after dark that much easier.

A GPS unit is crucial to fishing for catfish at night on Lake Wateree. Unlike many other lakes, Wateree is very dark at night, with few shoreline lights to provide illumination. Knowing your GPS and trusting it is crucial to a successful night fishing.

Guide Rodger Taylor recommends plotting areas you want to fish well before dark and marking the waypoints on your GPS.

“Not knowing where you are or how to get to where you want to go is never fun, and it is much worse at night,” he said.

Like many guides, one of the most-important lessons Taylor passes along to anglers is to learn how to use your electronics, calling them valuable tools that will help you catch more fishs.

“If I catch a fish, I mark the point on my unit; I know every location where I have caught fish on Wateree,” he said, explaining that being able to get back on an exact spot is important. Missing a location by as little as 50 feet can make the difference between catching fish and spending a quiet evening anchored.
