Should life jackets be mandatory for all boaters?

With Memorial Day Weekend right around the corner, the SCDNR would like to remind boaters of the personal floatation device (PFD) regulations. Some boaters, like youth under the age of 12, and anyone operating a personal watercraft, are required to wear their PFDs. Others only need to have them onboard.

Should the law mandate that everyone on a boat be required to wear a PFD?

SCDNR hosting Field Day at Webb Center June 4

As part of a year-long celebration the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources is hosting a Field Day on Saturday, June 4th at the James W. Webb Wildlife Center and Management Area near Garnett in Hampton County. The Webb Center was the first Wildlife Management Area (WMA) purchased by the State of South Carolina in 1941. Now, 75 years later, SCDNR provides quality public outdoor recreation opportunities on more than 1 million acres of land across the state in the WMA program.

Angler catches huge cobia out of Hatteras

Blake Michael of Poquoson, Va., knew he was headed to Hatteras earlier this week for the catch of a lifetime, but he didn’t know it would be a doubleheader. Fishing with his buddy, Bryan Nester, this past Thursday, a few days before marrying his “catch-of-a-lifetime” girlfriend, Hailey Hill, Michael landed a 116.2-pound cobia, missing the state record by slightly more than four ounces.

Record ‘sling-bow’ gobbler downed in Rockingham County

Robert “Sandy” Brady of Reidsville bagged an eastern wild turkey gobbler in Rockingham County the last day of the 2016 hunting season. 

Although the bird weighed a modest 17 pounds, sported an 11 1/8-inch beard and 1 3/8-inch spurs, it nonetheless is a North Carolina and world-record for the type of weapon he used, a sling bow.
