Programs will be held at Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education in Transylvania County
The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is offering 14 outdoors public programs in June at the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education in Transylvania County.
The programs, which are free, are open on a first-come, first-serve basis and pre-registration is required by registering online.
June 6 and June 18 – Nature Nuts: Fishing from 9 to 11 a.m. Open to participants ages 4-7. Join Pisgah Center staff for a fun-filled morning taking a hayride to a local lake and going fishing. All equipment is provided.
June 3 – Kids’ Introduction to Fly Fishing from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Open to participants ages 8-13. Learn the basics of fly fishing, such as equipment, knots and casting. Finish the workshop by spending a couple of hours fishing the Davidson River. All materials are provided. Participants should bring a lunch.
June 4 – Women’s Introduction to Fly Fishing from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Open to female participants 12 and up. Learn the basics of fly fishing, such as equipment, knots and casting. Finish the workshop by spending a couple of hours fishing the Davidson River. All materials are provided. Participants should bring a lunch.
June 6 – Eco-Explorers: Stream Investigation from 1 to 3 p.m. Open to participants ages 8– 13. Spend the afternoon with Pisgah Center staff exploring the Davidson River in search of aquatic macro invertebrates. Based on findings, participants determine the river’s water quality and learn how aquatic organisms play an important role in the ecosystem and to mountain trout. Snorkels and masks are available so participants should come prepared to get wet. Swimwear and a towel are recommended.
June 7 – Introduction to Fly Fishing from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Open to participants 12 and up. Learn the basics of fly fishing, such as equipment, knots and casting. Finish the workshop by spending a couple of hours fishing the Davidson River. All materials are provided. Participants should bring a lunch.
June 10 – Casting for Beginners: Level 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Open to participants 12 and up. This is a perfect introductory workshop for beginners. Participants will learn various casting techniques at their own pace from experienced instructors. This class will be held at Lake Imaging in DuPont State Recreational Forest. All equipment and materials are provided. Participants should bring a lunch.
June 11 – Archery from 10 to 11:30 a.m. or 1 to 2:30 p.m. Open to participants ages 8 and up. Learn the basics of archery in this introductory class. Topics covered will include archery safety and the different types of bows and arrows. Participants will have plenty of time shooting at targets. Please choose only one program time to participate.
June 13-17 – A Week in the Water from 9 a.m. to noon daily. Open to participants ages 8–15. This weeklong series of hands-on classes will focus on the art and skill of fly-fishing. Participants will learn about equipment, knots, casting techniques and more.
June 14 – BB Gun Shooting Range from 10 to 11:30 a.m. or 1 to 2:20 p.m. Open to participants ages 8–15. Learn about firearm safety and shooting. This program will focus on shooting safety as participants learn about different types of firearms and proper handling of firearms. They will practice their shooting skills on an outside BB gun range. Please choose only one time to participate.
June 18 – Be Bear Aware from 1 to 3 p.m. Open to all ages. Learn about the fascinating black bears living in the mountains and how to co-exist with them safely.
June 18 – Introduction to Tenkara from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Open to participants 14 and up. Join guest presenter Jason Sparks of Appalachian Tenkara as he introduces the newly popular form of traditional Japanese fly fishing, Tenkara. Topics covered will include a history of angling style, equipment orientation, a unique perspective on Japanese flies (Kebari), and Tenkara methods to use in local waters. A hands-on learning session will follow the classroom instruction. Participants should bring a lunch. Limited to 15 participants.
June 20-24 – A Week in the Water from 9 a.m. to noon daily. Open to participants ages 8–15. This weeklong series of hands-on classes will focus on the art and skill of fly-fishing. Participants will learn about equipment, knots, casting techniques and more.
June 28 – Introduction to Fly Fishing: Lake Fishing from 7 a.m. to noon. Open to participants 12 and up. Learn the basics of fly fishing on a local lake. Topics covered include equipment, knots, casting techniques and aquatic entomology. Equipment and materials are provided. Participants should bring a lunch and meet at High Falls parking area in DuPont State Recreational Forest. Limited to six participants who must have completed the Introduction to Fly Fishing class or have equivalent experience before taking this class.

The Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education is located near Brevard, just south of Asheville, by the Davidson River in Transylvania County. The center features nature trails and five large aquariums representing aquatic mountain habitats. The center is adjacent to the Bobby N. Setzer State Fish Hatchery, where trout are raised in 54 raceways. The center is open Monday through Saturday from April through November and Monday through Friday from December through March. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
