Waylon’s big crab claw buck

6-year-old shot big buck with a crossbow

Waylon Chermak of New London, NC killed an 8-point buck in Mecklenburg County, NC on Sept. 12, 2026.

He shot the buck with a Ravin R26 crossbow during an afternoon hunt while sitting on the ground from 20 yards away.

Chermak’s dad summed up the hunt with these words:

“Waylon got another NC stud yesterday evening. We Put out some Black Widow Deer Lures branch butter in some big hardwoods we knew some good deer was using. One in particular was Waylons target buck Mr. Crabs. He’s watched him for a couple years but yesterday evening it all came together during that afternoon thunderstorm.

Cold rains and high winds were making the acorns rain in those big oaks. Wasn’t long and Mr. Crabs showed up at 20 yards checking out the branch butter. The rest was history with memories made. High fives and hugs while celebrating a successful opening evening archery hunt. At 6-years-old, he’s starting to learn the importance of conservation and growing and managing your deer herd and knowing what it takes to harvest mature whitetails in NC every year.”

Chermak is now entered in our Bag-A-Buck Contest, and is eligible to win our monthly prize pack, which includes a set of Ultimate Eyes & Ears Combo from ShellShock Pro, a YETI Rambler bottle, a prize package from Buck Commander and Duck Commander, and a Carolina Sportsman hat, as well as our Grand Prize, a 2-day hunt for two to Cherokee Run Hunting Lodge in Chesterfield County, SC.
