Sportsman’s stocking stuffers

A shooting vest, snake gaiters and shotgun shells are great Christmas gifts for the upland game hunter in South Carolina.

If you are looking for a gift for a hunter in the family but really haven’t a clue, here are a few ideas.

• Spinning wing and other motion decoys. Originally made just for ducks, motion decoys are now available for doves and geese, and they must work because they have been banned is some states. They range in price from about $80 and come in many different styles and sizes.

• Upland bird vest. The big caution here is to get the same kind your hunter already has or one that they would like to have because hunters are particular about their vests. Good quality vests and game bags run about $40 and up and there are a huge variety from which to choose.

• Snake chaps. If your hunter wears snake boots but complains that they are stiff, uncomfortable and heavy, get them a pair of Turtle Skin snake armor gaiters. At about $140, they are very light yet effective protection against snakes.

• A box or case of shells. This is an old standby that will never disappoint your hunter. Whether you pick a $5 box of dove shells as a stocking stuffer or a case of steel duck loads at over $100 as a main gift, you can’t go wrong here.
