Give coyotes both barrels

Hunters using magnum rimfires like .17 HMR or .22 Magnum are a coyote’s worst enemies.

Hunting coyotes after deer season on public land requires the use of rimfire rifles or shotguns with shot sizes of No. 2 or smaller. Many hunters prefer 12-gauge shotguns with No. 4 or No. 5 shot. Hevi-Shot makes a shell designed specifically for this purpose. Their “Dead Coyote” round is designed to hit harder than lead and it comes in 2 ¾- , 3- and 3 ½-inch sizes.

Most will use a full choke, but the super full chokes used for turkeys are not as efficient on coyotes, which are typically moving when shot. Heavy loads designed for turkeys are also very effective and will definitely roll a coyote out to forty yards.

Rifle hunters opt for the .17 HMR or the .22 Rem. Magnum. The .22 Magnum offerts are more bullet options, from a 33-grain ballistic tip to a 45-grain hollow point, both of which will dispatch coyotes at reasonable ranges.
