Wise wins Palmetto Sportsmen’s Classic Users Choice Award

David Wise's Calhoun County buck was chosen as the SouthCarolinaSportsman.com Palmetto Sportsmen's Classic Users Choice Award winner.

A surge during the last few days of voting earned David Wise the SouthCarolinaSportsman.com Palmetto Sportsmen’s Classic Users Choice Award for his 162 4/8-inch buck.

Wise will receive a prize pack of Official Sportsman gear to go along with the bragging rights of being the inaugural Users Choice Award winner.

His deer received more than 18,000 votes or 64 ½ percent of the 28,485 votes cast. Wise beat out Wes McCutchen’s 113-inch Williamsburg County deer (9,257 votes, 32 ½ percent) and Don Clewley’s 147 1/8-inch York County monster (849 votes, 3 percent).

Wise said the hunt that produced the deer was a complete surprise to him, since he had no idea such a brute lived in the woods he hunted.

“I seen a couple of nice bucks in velvet, and I was going to shoot one,” Wise said.

However, he took one more look around and another deer caught his eye.

“I happened to see this one standing in the pines, and I said, ‘Well, that’s the one I want right there,’” Wise said. “He walked out, and I took him.”

While the hunter knew the deer was a nice buck, Wise wasn’t prepared for what he found when he retrieved the trophy.

“I knew he was big, but I didn’t know he was that big until I got to him,” he said.
