Good glass is good judgement when hunting cutovers

A set of quality binoculars can give hunters a tremendous advantage when hunting cutovers.

You’ll see much more than with the naked eye

Good optics are a must for hunting clear-cut areas. The need to search for deer in the briars and brambles that swallow them in these areas is essential.

Joel Harris of Zeiss Optics recommends a good 10X binocular for this situation.

“You are looking for details, and quality glass is imperative to finding that eye, ear or tail flick,” Harris said.

Choosing a lesser-quality glass will hurt more than help. You are relying on something of inferior quality to help you locate the buck hiding in the brambles.

As with all hunting gear, price is always a consideration. Few of us can afford binoculars that cost more than our rifle. But suffice to say, get the best you can afford. Just like you don’t put a $30 scope on your $1,000 rifle, don’t expect to find a deer with $30 binoculars. Glass in the $300 to $500 range are acceptable in most situations. Whether you choose to go with the 10X or a smaller 8X, find one that is clear and comfortable to hold for long periods.
