Davidson County man wins November contest
Darwin Hudler of the Davidson County village of Midway has spent an awful long time over the past 15 years taking his son, Timothy, deer hunting. Payback was great this season.
On Nov. 21, Darwin Hudler, 74, killed a nice 6-point Stokes County buck — the second he took from the same stand — with a .50-caliber CVA Wolf. A couple of days later, he entered the buck in North Carolina Sportsman’s Bag-A-Buck contest, and a week after that, his entry was drawn as the winner of the monthly contest for November.
For winning the monthly contest, Hudler will receive a gift certificate to the online Sportsman’s Outdoor Store and a year’s subscription to North Carolina Sportsman magazine. Along with everyone who enters the contest, he will be eligible for a drawing for the grand prize: a Leupold optics package that includes a rangefinder, binoculars and rifle scope. It will be presented at the Dixie Deer Classic next March in Raleigh.
The Hudlers were hunting farms along the Forsyth-Stokes county border, and according to Timothy, the landowners wanted the deer herd thinned — killing only big bucks was secondary.
“He hasn’t killed a deer in 15 years; he’s been taking me for years, and now I’m taking him,” Timothy Hudler said. “They want us to thin them out, so he killed a smaller 6-pointer, then he killed the bigger 6-pointer.”
Darwin Hudler said the two of them had four tree stands up around corn feeders and had seen the bigger 6-pointer on trail-camera photos. The buck came in just before dark, and after Hudler squeezed the muzzleloader’s trigger, it dropped on the spot.
