Trout on topwater

Guide Danny Rourk likes to fish big topwater plugs for speckled trout on overcast or rainy days.

Ask a freshwater bass fisherman about the most-exciting way to catch black bass, and most will revel over the exciting explosions of bass on topwater plugs.

The scene is similarly exciting when gator trout, the big specimens, are enticed to smash a topater plug being “walked” through their domain.

Guide Danny Rourke of Tailwind Charters loves fishing topwater plugs for specks when the weather doesn’t look great.

“The one big advantage of fishing on an overcast or rainy day is the trout will strike surface plugs with abandon,” he said.

Some of Rourk’s favorite baits for smashing surface strikes include the Zara Spook saltwater series and MirrOlure’s myriad of surface plugs, twitch baits and suspending jerkbaits. Favorite colors generally are bright chrome or very light hues. Also effective under the same conditions are the soft-plastic surface baits like SlugGo and FinSfish. Rig them on a light jighead or large J-hook with the hook point exposed, cast them out and retrieve with an erratic motion.
