The mantis shrimp rig

The author caught this 20-inch slot redfish around a dock using a Gulp! mantis shrimp on a 1/8-ounce jighead.

Ja Malphrus catches most of redfish around docks with a 1/8-ounce Bass Pro Shops jighead, along with a Gulp! mantis shrimp.

Use a chartreuse shrimp in dark water to help cast a silhouette. Use a white shrimp behind the jighead in clearer water to reflect sunlight.

Malphrus feeds the jig’s hook through the body of the shrimp, leaving it exposed on the bottom of the lure. He ties about a feet of 40-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon leader to the braided line spooled on his reel. That keeps fish from seeing his line, and it’s also more durable around dock pilings.
