Hook holster

Dennis Barbour has dozens of hooks and leaders ready because so many need to be replaced when flounder fishing around structure.

Capt. Dennis Barbour uses gold Kahle hooks when he fishes for flounder, and he makes up dozens of rigs before a trip. Anglers must keep their hooks handy because break-offs and cut-offs are commonplace when fishing in the “junkyards” at artificial reefs.

Barbour cuts sections of foam pipe insulation and slips the leaders inside, swivel end first. Once the leader is inside, he pokes the hook points into the end of the insulation tube to secure them. When he needs to replace a hook and leader, he simply pulls the hook free and out comes the leader without any tangles.

He prevents the insulation tubes from rolling around the console by tying two of them together with a rubber band.
