Surry County 8-point goes down
Hannah Haynes Johnson of Dobson, NC killed an 8-point buck in Surry County, NC on Aug. 23, 2026.
She shot the buck with a Remington Model 700 – youth model .243 with a 3-9×40 scope during an evening hunt while sitting on the ground from 75 yards away.
Haynes Johnson summed up the hunt with these words:
“Turns out I didn’t miss Sunday night after all!
I saw this deer from the house and proceeded to very carefully and quietly bear crawl through a whole lot of tall grass to get close enough to have a decent shot. I was kneeling, elbow on my knee, and of course I get buck fever so adrenaline didn’t help. I was just sure I missed when he and the does he was with ran off.
I was one veryyyy sad girl that night. But he had apparently taken off in the exact opposite direction I thought he did…and I am so thankful we found him!!! Shout out to Aaron Moser for finding him and Kenneth Key and Dylan Hege for their help!! First ever in velvet for me…a really cool opportunity with this early season! 18 3/4-inch inside spread, 21-inch outside spread.”
