2023 NC flounder season announced

NC anglers will get 2 weeks of flounder season this fall.

Flounder season is Sept. 15 – 29

North Carolina anglers will have a shorter flounder season in 2023 than they did last year. This year’s season will run from Sept. 15 to Sept. 29, as announced by NCDMF in late June.

These dates are for recreational hook-and-line and gig fisheries, and include a one-fish per person/per day creel limit, and a 15-inch total length minimum size limit.

Harvesting flounder with a Recreational Commercial Gear License is prohibited.

One reason this year’s season is shorter than last year’s is because of the Total Allowable Catch clause in the Southern Flounder Fishery Management Plan Amendment 3, which states any overage to one year’s quota must be subtracted from the following year’s quota. The Total Allowable Catch for 2022 was 170,655 pounds, and anglers caught 56,340 pounds more than that. The 2023 Total Allowable Catch for the recreational season is 114,315 pounds.
