Trophies galore

This 18-inch brown trout is eligible for a citation from the N.C. Angler Recognition Program and is common sight on the upper Catawba River.

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission defines a trophy brown trout as any fish weighing 2 1/2 pounds or more or measuring 18 inches or longer — according to the N.C. Angler Recognition Program.

Any angler who wants to catch one  , should have a good chance to land one from the Catawba River’s special regulations trout waters. In prior years, there were separate categories for trout from hatchery support and wild-trout waters, with smaller brown trout qualifying if they were caught from wild-trout waters.

On the Fly Guide Service requires its clients to release all fish caught to ensure that plenty of big fish remain in the stream. If an angler wants a mounted fish, however, he can take measurements and record them. Many taxidermists will do reproduction mounts from measurements.
