Tar River Reservoir has history of record-breaking white crappie

This 3-pound, 11-ounce white crappie caught in March 2010 from Tar River Reservoir by Tracey Smith was the state record for almost a month before it was beaten by a single ounce.

In 2010, two Nashville, N.C. anglers set state records for white crappie at Tar River Reservoir.

On March 8,  Tracey Smith, caught this 3-pound, 11-ounce fish, which he froze pending a trip to the taxidermist. On April 6, Ray Patterson caught a 3-pound, 12-ounce fish.

The current state record white crappie is a 3-pound, 15-ounce fish caught by Joey Boretti from a pond in Wake County on April 1, 2013.

In a case of woulda-coulda-shoulda, Patterson said his fish weighed an ounce more than 4 pounds, but the fish lost 5 ounces by the time he got it weighed on certified scales.

The biggest crappie that veteran crappie fishermen Tommy Short has caught at the reservoir weighed 3 pounds, 6 ounces.
