Roanoke River striper fishing without boats

Reports of good concentrations of fish will draw lots of people to an area, meaning great action but some crowded drifts.

Fishermen without boats don’t have to miss out on the spring striper run in the Roanoke River. Working with local county and municipal governments, the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission was awarded several federal grants to construct fishing piers and riverbank parks for fishermen without boats.

Washington and Halifax Counties have one each, while Martin County has three. The Washington and Martin County piers are handicapped accessible.

Heading upriver from the Albemarle Sound, the fishing-access locations are:

• Washington County

Plymouth Boardwalk. Accessible fishing pier and gazebo located on Water Street in Plymouth adjacent to the Water Street Boating Access Area.

• Martin County

Astoria Landing Public Fishing Area, Jamesville. Fishing pier adjacent to the Astoria Landing Boating Access Area on Astoria Road off US 64.

River Landing Park, Williamston. Fishing pier adjacent to the Williamston Boating Access Area on River Road off US 17/13.

Hamilton Public Fishing Area, Hamilton. Fishing pier adjacent to the Hamilton Boating Access Area at the end of East Main Street off NC 903.

• Halifax County

River Falls Park, Weldon. Bank-fishing opportunities available during moderate to low river flows. Park is adjacent to the Weldon Boating Access Area off US 158/301.
