T.J. Penninger has a big flathead catfish tied up to a floating tetherball after an underwater battle.

Noodling for catfish has been introduced to the general public through the following productions:

• “Late Night with David Letterman” in 1989: Jerry Rider of Oklahoma hand-grabbed for a catfish in front of a national television audience. Rider entered a huge tank and caught a catfish with his bare hands.

• “Okie Noodling”: A serious film documentary about the history of noodling by Bradley Beesley that aired on PBS in 2001.

• “Okie Noodling 2”: A follow-up film by Beesley in 2008 about noodling.

• Okie Noodling Tournament: An annual noodling contest held in Oklahoma prompted by Beesley’s first film.

• “Dirty Jobs” on the Discovery Channel: Host Mike Rowe and two Oklahoma fishermen went noodling in this 2003 pilot episode.

• Fox’s Fearless: A 2007 DVD describing the history and practice of noodling.

• Girls Gone Grabbling: A DVD by Catfish Grabblers about women who noodle for catfish.

• Hillbilly Handfishin’,: A Discovery Channel television series based in Oklahoma that began airing in 2010.

• Mudcats: A television series on the History Channel that debuted in 2012.

• River Monsters: A television series on the Animal Planet network that debuted in 2012.
