New electronics are major aids for crappie fishermen

Freddie Sinclair’s depth finder can show four different views at one time, which helps locate baitfish and crappie.

Guide Freddie Sinclair has had the same fishing platform, an 18-foot bass boat, for years, but he recently purchased newer electronics because detecting crappies beneath the lake’s surface is a key to his success, especially during winter.

“I replaced my old (depth finder) for a Humminbird ONIX Series,” he said. “It’s what they call a ‘cross-touch’ model. You can touch any (program) on the screen and activate or bring it to the front in one of four places on the screen.

“It’s amazing. You can see four different functions at once, and you can pick and choose which programs you want to see.”

Programs include a bottom-reader screen, side-scanner, chart-plotter, digital signal processor, built-in cartography, an internal GPS receiver, plus dual SD card slots.

Sinclair said the unit also has a “back-up” touch screen that allows an angler to look back over an area he’s already fished and mark a waypoint for structure or anything else.

“You can mark individual fish with this thing,” he said.
