Catch fish, then cut bait when targeting redfin pickerel

Cut the pelvic fin from a redfin pickerel and you’ve got a bait that will catch plenty more fish.

The traditional baits for catching redfin pickerel are the pelvic fin and the top or bottom half of its forked tail.

The easiest way for an angler to cut bait correctly in the field is by using shears. If using a knife, lay the fish on a bucket lid, cutting board or other solid surface for safety. Another way to make the bait is to do it at home when cleaning the catch and freezing the fins in a plastic bag.

When using the pelvic fin, the angler should make a triangular incision about 1 1/2 to 2 inches long, tapering from the head end toward the tail, with the fin in the center. The combination of white flesh and red fin, plus the fishy scent, is irresistible.
