Kirby takes BFL title at Norman

Catawba’s Cliff Kirby won the March 4 Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League North Carolina Division tournament at Lake Norman with a five-fish catch totaling 15 pounds, 8 ounces.For his effort, Kirby received $4,839.

Completing the top five were Maurice Freeze of Concord, second, with 14-09 for $2,419; Josh Brady of Rockwell, third, with 14-01 for $1,614; Chuck Douthit of Mooresville, fourth, with 13-03 for $1,129; and David Williams of Maiden, fifth, with 12-04 for $968.

Freeze took the big-fish award of $730 with a 5-pound, 15-ounce bass and received an additional $500 as the winner of the Ranger Cup award.

Kris Meredith of Statesville topped the Co-angler Division with 10-05 and banked $2,419.

Other co-angler scores were Travis Ruff of Connelly Springs, second, with 9-03 that paid $1,210; Alfred Keisling Jr. of Mooresville, third, with 9-00 that paid $807; Jeff Smith of Reidsville, fourth, with 8-06 that paid $565; and Ed Markham of Statesville, fifth, with 8-04 that paid $484.

Junior Self of Vale had the biggest bass among the co-anglers with a 4-pound, 5-ounce fish and earned $365.

Kevin Langill of Terrell earned a check for $3,008.00 by placing 19th at the March 2-4 CITGO Bassmaster Southern Tour event at Sam Rayburn, Jasper, Texas.

Michael Goodman of Nebo ranked 40th and received $1,410.

Freeze placed third at the Feb. 25 Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League S.C.

Division tournament at Santee-Cooper. He weighed in 19-07 to win $1,719.

In the Co-angler Division, Eddie Cook of Clemmons ranked second with 9-09 and received $1,272; Jimmy Nunn of Statesville placed third with 8-12 and earned $849; and Tim Turner of Concord finished fourth with 8-00 and banked $551.

Wayne Hauser of Winston-Salem placed fifth among co-anglers at the March 11 Wal-Mart FLW Series tournament at Lake Lanier, Ga., and earned $7,000.

Marty Stone of Linden placed 21st at the March 16-19 CITGO Bassmaster Elite Series tournament at Sam Rayburn, Jasper, Texas. Stone’s catch of 44-00 paid $10,250.

Mt. Holly’s Britt Myers ranked 48th with 33-10 and received $10,000.

Greg Hackney of Gonzales, La., took the top prize of $102,000 with 79-10.

Patrick Tierney of Denver and and Robert Walser of Lexington placed in the money at the March 18 Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League South Carolina Division tournament at Lake Murray, S.C.

Tierney ranked second with 19-13 and received $2,507 plus a $500 bonus as winner of the Ranger Cup award; Walser placed fourth with 18-00 and banked $1,170.

Albemarle’s Dean Talbert won the Co-angler Division with 19-14 and earned $2,403.

Also among the co-anglers, James Pendleton of Vale finished third with 14-12 for $1,003, and Jimmy Drumm of Mt. Holly ranked fifth with 11-14 for $481.

Lonnie Fox of Bahama won the March 18 Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League Piedmont Division qualifier at Kerr Lake with five bass totaling 21-08, good enough for $6,001.

Raleigh’s David Galloway finished third with 16-05 and won $2,001, and Lee Williams of Durham placed fourth with 15-13 and collected $1,403.

Larry Inman of Greensboro took the big-fish award of $995 with a 7-pound, 1-ounce bass.

In the Co-angler Division, Mike McCarthy of Jacksonville had 12-11 to claim the third-place check of $1,503; Darrin Kenyon of Mebane took fourth place with 12-00 that paid $701; and Brian Young of Kill Devil Hills earned the fourth-place award of $601 with 11-06.
