The three bass-fishing Gunters had big back-to-back weekends on Lake Murray this past September.
On Sept. 19, Stan Gunter of Saluda, the father in the fishing trio, won the American Bass Anglers-Division 96 tournament with a 5-bass limit that weighed 19.19 pounds, taking home the $663 first-prize money. Son Bryan Gunter of Ninety Six took second with 18.30, and another son, Bradley Gunter of Greenwood, took third with 18.03. Phillip Anderson of Saluda was fourth with 18.01, and Dan Montgomery of Greenwood was fifth with 16.35.
On Sept. 25, Stan Gunter and Bradley Gunter finished first among 104 fishermen in The Bass Federation of South Carolina’s “Mr. Lake Murray” tournament, winning $5,000 with a catch of 24.15 pounds.
Throwing topwater baits and casting to schooling bass in the mid-section of the lake was a key to their success. They culled through more than 25 keepers to arrive at their winning limit.
Bobby Stanfill and Dusty Turner finished second with 23.75 pounds, followed by Al Fortner and Kevin Fulmer with 21.86, Joe Kastner and Jeff Woods with 21.00 and Kevin Sanders and Michael Murphy with 20.30.
Rounding out the top 10 were: Tony Postell and Sammy Landrum, sixth with 19.92; Beau Dixon and Doug Lown, seventh with 19.35; Keith Henderson and John Long, eighth with 19.09; Philip Anderson and Russ Padgett, ninth with 18.55 and Matthew West and Casey Hendrix, 10th with 18.18 pounds.
Chris Sample and Charles Wilkie caught the big bass of the tournament, a 6.54-pounder, for $500.
Eighteen teams brought in 15 pounds or more, with 23 limits brought to the scales and 137 total bass for 456 pounds.
Midlands Striper Club, Lady Angler Tournament, Lake Murray Sept. 25
Kelsey Barnes of Lexington took first place and caught the big fish at the Midlands Striper Club’s annual Lady Angler tournament Sept. 25 on Lake Murray.
Barnes, 12, weighed-in two fish for a combined weight of 23 pounds, 11 ounces. Her big fish, an 18-pounder, was big enough to win the tournament by itself.
Jennifer Lindler of West Columbia, a past Lady Angler tournament champion, took second with 14-8. Elyse Brensinger of Lexington was third with 13-8. Two-dozen lady anglers weighed in a total of 44 stripers.
FLW Savannah River,
Clarks Hill Lake Sept. 25-26
Jayme Rampey of Liberty won the FLW Savannah River Division on Clarks Hill Lake on Sept 25-26 with a 2-day total of 27.12 pounds. The win was worth $5,997.
Brandon Cobb of Greenwood was second with 26.07, worth $2,999. Brian Easler of Inman finished fifth with 23.09 for $1,199.
Greg Noles of Lagrange, Ga., won the co-angler division with 14.05 pounds, worth $2,824. Don Mabry of Seneca was the highest-finishing fisherman from South Carolina, taking fifth with 13.07 for $565.
FLW South Carolina,
Lake Wylie, Sept. 11-12
Parks Jones, Jr. of York won the 2-day tournament with 26 pounds, six ounces, for a first-place check of $4,943.
Britt Myers of Lake Wylie was second with 23-13, taking home $2,471. Michael Anders of Pelzer was third with 23-1 for $1,648. William Smith of Monks Corner was fifth with 22-1 for $989.
On the co-angler side, Calvin Sharp of Roundo won with 21-10 for a $2,471 payday. Scott Peavy of Lugoff was third with 17-4 for $822, and D.J. McEachern of Columbia took fourth place and $577 with a catch of 16-3.
Manning, Brunson win CATT
Nelson Walker of Manning and Chris Brunson of Sumter won the final CATT Santee Cooper Summer Trail event on Sept. 18 with a catch of 14.21 pounds, good for $1,500.
Brett Mitchell of Timmonsville and Jerry Montjoy of Eutawville finished second with 12.97 and won $960. John and Dianne Geddings of Sumter were third with 11.45 for $365. Mike Watson and Jim Smoak weighed in the big fish at 5.16 pounds and received $90.
Richardsons win at Wateree
Mark Richardson and William Richardson of Irmo won the CATT-Lake Wateree tournament on Sept. 18 with 13.81 pounds. They also had the day’s big fish, a 3.81-pounder. Their total winnings were $894.
Steve Borton and Brian Boltman of Sumter took second place and $300 with their catch of 13.25 pounds. Jay Keith of Camden and Donald Hinson of Lugoff were third with 12.38, winning $200. Rounding out the top five were Casey Logan and Jim Sims of Hopkins with 10.31 for $100, and Alan Fletcher and Danny Johnson with 10.06 for $100.
