Coble captures a Classic berth

Jeff Coble of Beaufort qualified for his third Bassmaters Classic by winning the Bassmaster Weekend Series tournament at Clarks Hill Lake.

Beaufort’s Jeff Coble will be competing in his third Bassmaster Classic after receiving an invitation to the prestigious event by winning the Nov. 14-17 Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series at Clarks Hill Lake, S.C.Coble, a Snow Camp native, charged into the lead from fourth place at the final round with 14.43 pounds for a four-day total of 40.89 pounds to take the $100,000 first-place prize and the Classic invitation.

Coble earned an additional $105,000 as a Triton Gold member.

The 45-year-old angler previously competed at the Classic in 2002 and 2006.

The 2008 Classic, set for Feb. 22-24 at Lake Hartwell, S.C., is a site familiar to Coble.

“Now I’ve got to get up there and pre-fish Lake Hartwell,” Coble said. “I’ve fished it before around that time of year, maybe a few months later. The big thing is going to be the weather, if it keeps warming up. I’m comfortable fishing Hartwell. It’s just a matter of finding the fish.”

William Kemp of Scotland Neck placed second at Clarks Hill Lake with 38.07 pounds.

Raleigh’s William Vaughan finished third among the co-anglers at the Nov. 3 Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League Chevy Wild Card Tournament at Lake Wheeler, Ala.

Vaughan received $1,393 for his catch of 15-03 plus an invitation to the Wal-Mart BFL All-American tournament scheduled May 29-31 at the Connecticut River.

John Powell, one of the first stars of the BASS circuit, passed away Oct. 6 at 78 years of age. A noted shallow-water expert, Powell loved to fish the Grassy Creek area of Kerr Lake.

Powell retired from the BASS circuit in 1984 but continued to participate in fishing seminars and other fishing-related activities.
