Tar Heels sweep top 5 at Gaston

Patrick Wooten of Wake Forest won the Sept. 29-30 Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League Piedmont Division Super Tournament at Lake Gaston with 29-11 and received $5,741.

He fished a Senko near submerged grass to take his two-day limit of 10 bass.

Joe Nichols Jr. of Ahoskie finished second with 29-10 for $3,378; Christopher Burns of Durham was third with 23-13 for $2,255; Rodney Sorrell of Stokesdale was fourth with 22-06 for $1,576 and and Scott Smith of Apex finished fifth with 22-00 for $1,351.

Gary Love of Roanoke Rapids won the big-fish award of $982 with a 5-pound, 7-ounce bass.

Winston-Salem’s Jamie Denison captured the co-angler division with 21-14 and banked $3,378 plus the co-angler big-fish prize of $491 with a 6-pound bass.

Other Tar Heel co-anglers in the money were Rodney Stevens of Garner, second, with 17-03 for $1,689; Jim Nichols of Chapel Hill, fourth, with 12-08 for $788; and Orlando Giles of Lexington, fifth, with 11-14 for $676.

George Lambeth of Thomasville won the Sept. 22-23 Shenandoah Division Super Tournament event at the Potomac River, Woodbridge, Va.

Lambeth’s two-day catch of 27-14, taken with topwater lures, was worth $5,248 plus a Ranger boat bonus of $926.

Co-anglers Joe Mance of Charlotte placed fourth, and Clyde Whiteside of Forest City finished fifth at the Sept. 22-23 Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League South Carolina Division Super Tournament event at Lake Murray, S.C.

Mance had 17-11 and earned $1,513, and Whiteside weighed in 12-03 and collected $605. Whiteside also took the co-angler big-fish award of $409 with a 5-pound, 1-ounce bass.

Dave Wolak of Wake Forest placed seventh with 48-02 and won $6,860 at the Sept. 27-29 Bassmaster Central Open at Lake Amistad, Del Rio, Texas.

More importantly, he earned a berth in the 2008 BASS Masters Classic by finishing in the top three in the Central Division.

Pat Golden of High Point qualified for the Bassmaster Elite Series through his finish in the Central Division.

Lexington’s David Wright won the Oct. 3-6 Stren Series Northern Division tournament at Lake Gaston, Bracey, Va., with a four-day haul of 49-08 and received $25,000, a Ranger boat and a $3,000 bonus for the Ranger Cup.

Wright tossed a Zoom crankbait around stumps in 10 to 12 feet of water for four days at Pea Hill Creek to take catches of 15-1, 13-3, 12-14, and 8-6.

Chris Baumgardner of Gastonia placed third with 46-10 and earned $10,518. He caught his fish with a Chatterbait.

Dustin Wilks of Rocky Mount finished sixth with 42-11 and collected $3,678.

Chris Baldwin of Lexington, Rip Bass of Spring Hope and Ray Griffin of Henderson earned invitations to the Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League All-American tournament to be held May 29-31 at the Connecticut River by finishing in the top 6 at the Oct. 11-13 Wal-Mart BFL Regional at the Potomac River, Marbury, Md.

Baldwin placed second with 39-02 and earned $4,000. Bass ranked third with 33-13 and banked $2,000, while Griffin finished fifth with 30-05 and collected $1,200.

Co-angler Dean Talbert of Albemarle received an invitation to the All-American by finishing second at the Oct. 11-13 Wal-Mart BFL Regional at Clarks Hill Lake, Ga. Talbert earned $2,000 for his catch of 17-11.

Lexington’s David Fritts fell two points shy of winning the Land O’ Lakes Angler of the Year title in the Eastern Division of the Wal-Mart FLW Series. David Walker of Sevierville, Tenn. won the title and will lead the top 30 pros into the FLW Series fish-off.

Robert Griswold of Angier and Marty Stone of Linden finished in the money at the Oct. 18-20 Bassmaster Southern Open at Lake Wheeler, Decatur, Ala.

Griswold placed 15th with 29-03 and earned $1,750, while Stone ranked 24th with 25-15 and received $1,200.

Scott Reed of Angier finished eighth among the co-anglers with 21-14 and banked $1,750. Robert Green of Sedalia ranked 30th with 12-04 and won $400.

Scott Hamrick of Denver finished second at the Oct.18-20 Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League Regional at Fort Loudoun-Tellico Lakes, Tenn. Hamrick caught 22 pounds of bass and won $4,000.

Robert Sledzewski of Maiden captured the co-angler division with 11-09 and took home a Ranger boat.

Hamrick and Sledzewski received invitations to the All-American.

Randy Pope of Hickory and Jerry Pruitt of Vale landed a two-day total of 21.98 pounds to capture the semi-pro division of the Oct. 5-6 Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic at Kentucky Lake near Paris, Tenn.

Pope and Pruitt are well-known anglers recognized for their talented technique of “shooting docks” for crappie. The pair fished the backs of creeks, shooting docks in 2 to 17 feet of water while using White Lindy Fuzz-E-Grubs.

Pope and Pruitt took home a certificate for a new 188VS Ranger boat package with a Suzuki Outboard motor, Humminbird electronics and Minn Kota Trolling motor and a check for $3,000.
