Fishing rodeo, paddling clinic on tap near Cheraw on Saturday

A kids' fishing rodeo is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 15, at SCDNR's Cheraw Fish Hatchery.

Youths ages six to 15 can pre-register today for Sept. 14 events

The S.C. Department of Natural Resources and the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism have partnered to hold a free family event, a youth fishing rodeo and paddling clinic, on Saturday, Sept. 14, near Cheraw.

Youths ages six to 15 are encouraged to sign up for a fishing rodeo at SCDNR’s Cheraw Fish Hatchery and a paddling clinic at SCDPRT’s Cheraw State Park.

Youth will fish at the hatchery during one of two scheduled sessions, from 7:30 to 9 a.m. and 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. They must be accompanied by an adult, and no adult fishing will be allowed. Pre-registraion is required, and limited spaces are available. Call 803-737-8483 or visit www.dnr.sc.gov/aquaticed/rodeos to register. Sign-in is 30 minutes before the session begins. Youths must bring their own fishing equipment and tackle, and no minnows will be allowed. A specific creel limit will allow youths to catch and keep a number of fish.

The free paddling clinich will be held in two sessions, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and noon until 1 p.m. Canoes and kayaks, along with life jackets and paddles will be provided. The sessions are limited to the first 10 participants, so sign up today by calling 843-537-9656. Admission to Cheraw State Park is free.
