Bass anglers Chris Dover and Robert Fowler were participated in a fishing tournament Thursday evening when the unthinkable happened. The Skeeter bass boat they were fishing from was hit by a boater that was charged with DUI after the incident.

Luckily, the two anglers were able to jump out of their boat and avoid injuries. Thirty-three-year old Michael George Tsoulos of Charlotte was charged with water DUI with property damage and negligent operation of a water device.

According to Pfc. Akeem Ruff with the SCDNR, the crash occurred in broad daylight, around 7 p.m. close to Crowders Creek Cove.

Dover and Fowler were participating in the popular Lake Wylie Thursday Night Tournament Trail, and had launched their boat at 6:30 p.m. They were scheduled to fish until 11 p.m., when the tournament conducts their weigh in.

Directly after the two boats collided, Tsoulos picked up the two anglers in his boat. They went to a nearby dock and called 911.

The York County (S.C.) Sheriff’s Office and SCDNR investigated the crash. They determined alcohol was a contributing factor, then arrested Tsoulos and booked him in the York County jail.

A passenger riding with Tsoulos was injured and taken for treatment at Piedmont Medical Center. Ruff said the passenger was treated for minor injuries.
