Ryan Robertson of Rock Hill was fishing with his 6-year-old son, Matthew, on a cold Sunday afternoon in late March. Robertson caught and released what he calls a decent 4-pound bass, but Matthew took a photo that Robertson’s wife encouraged him to enter in the big bass photo contest – and he took home the top honors for April’s bass-fishing photo contest on www.SouthCarolinaSportsman.com.
“It was cold that day, and it was supposed to turn even colder soon after that,” Robertson said. “The fish were going to feed ahead of that cold snap I figured, so we set out to fish from the bank of some ponds on a golf course that was closed due to the weather. We are always going bass fishing around here somewhere, because we love the fight.”
“I was fishing with a Berkley Powerbait purple and black worm, and it was about mid-afternoon when the nice bass hit,” Robertson said. “He jumped all the way up out of the water and gave me a good fight. I caught another nice one later, and Matthew used his own rod to catch a couple of small bass. This was probably the best day we ever had out there on that acre-pond.”
Robertson’s wife saw the big-bass contest online and urged her husband to enter his photo, knowing that he would be thrilled should he win. She was right.
Robertson will receive a one-year subscription to South Carolina Sportsman magazine and a $25 Sportsman Outdoor Store gift coupon good for all manner of Official Sportsman Gear. He will also be entered in the big-bass contest finals later this summer, with the winner winning a Shimano Caenan 100 reel valued at $90. Anyone can enter the Big Bass photo gallery, but only registered members like Robertson are eligible to win prizes.
