Samantha Gay receives Governor’s Medallion Award for Volunteer Service

Samantha Gay off Walstonburg, NC was recognized with the Governor’s Medallion Award for Volunteer Service at the North Carolina State Capitol Building in Raleigh on May 11.

This award recognizes the top 20-25 volunteers in the state each year, and recipients are nominated at the county level, by the county award coordinator, then evaluated by a state-wide panel.

Gay, who founded the Fishers of Kids Anglers Academy and has been instrumental in getting hundreds of kids hooked on fishing over the years, hosting numerous fishing events that introduce kids to fishing, and providing further instruction to kids who have caught the fishing bug through her efforts, and the efforts of those she’s helped along the way.

Gay said she is honored to have received the award.

“I cannot even begin to express how much of an honor it was to have been selected to receive this award for my work with the Fishers of Kids Anglers Academy,” she said. “I am so grateful to those who nominated me, Mrs. Sharon Harrison, and the North Carolina Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service. This was an experience I will cherish forever.”
