COLUMBIA, S.C. – Californian Fred Roubanis had the right equation for solving Lake Murray’s largemouth bass this week, and it paid off: $101,000 in the bank.
Roumbanis, of Bixby, Calif., caught the biggest fish on the fourth and final day of the Bassmaster Elite Carolina Clash, a 6-pound, 13-ounce lunker, and it was enough to give him the championship by better than a pound-and-a-half over Steve Kennedy of Auburn, Ala.
Roumbanis, who led entering Sunday’s action, brought in a 5-bass limit that weighed 17-14 – including his big fish – for a 4-day total of 66-13. First place was worth $100,000, and his big fish on the final day was worth another $1,000.
Kennedy took second with 65-4 after weighing in a 16-12 sack. He won $32,000.
Edwin Evers of Mannsville, Okla., took third at 64-13, finishing with a 19-pound, 4-ounce limit that was the biggest of the final day. He won $25,000.
Davy Hite of Ninety Six, the only South Carolina pro to qualify to fish the final day, had a 19-pound limit and moved from sixth to fourth, finishing with 64-1 for $18,000. Bradley Hallman of Norman, Okla., rounded out the top five with 63-5, winning $17,000.
