As October approaches, head upstream

Guide Michael Murphy will move up the lake in the fall, fishing wooden cover in water that is more stained than the lower end.

Heading into the latter half of September, with October on the horizon, bass travel further up into feeder creeks, get on the bank, and spread out. For fishermen, It’s time to put the trolling motor down and cover a ton of water.

This is when guide Michael Murphy’s big spinnerbait comes into play. He’ll move up the lake, above the Dreher Island area, looking for off-colored water that’s more commonly found in that part of the lake.

Wooden cover seems to hold the most bass in the fall, giving them a good ambush point to feed on passing baitfish.  Any kind of wood will work this time of year: laydowns, stumps and dock posts. Make sure you don’t get in a rut jumping from one dock to the next; a good number of your bigger fish will come in between the docks, and never pass up a single laydown or stump. Those isolated pieces of cover can be a gold mine for kicker fish this time of year.
