Lake Murray fall bass particulars

Double rigs matching a topwater plug and Fluke-style bait can often produce some quick action on Lake Murray when bass are schooling on blueback herring.

1 — This year the majority of the larger schools of herring have been in Bear Creek and Crystal Lake areas. Target main and secondary points and humps in these two areas.

2 — The south side of Shull Island has a great stretch of points if the wind blows out of the south or east.

3 — Goat and Pine Island also have held large schools of herring this summer, and the main-lake points on this shoreline all the way to the ramp at Lake Murray Dam will be productive for a mixed bag of largemouth and stripers.

4 — The points around Jakes Landing have also been roaming grounds for the herring this summer and are definitely worth a stop this fall.

5 — Rocky creek is a great area to start looking for shallow fishing later in September.

These public boat ramps should put you in the middle of the action: (A) Lake Murray Dam; (B) Jake’s Landing; (C) Hilton Recreation Area; (D) Koons Landing; (E) Dreher Island State Park: (F) Big Man’s Marina.
