10-point buck was in full velvet

Isaac Niemitalo of Sophia, NC killed a 10-point velvet buck in Alamance County on Sept. 11, 2024. He shot the buck with a Mathews VXR compound bow from 35 yards away. Niemitalo was hunting from a tree saddle when the buck showed up.

He shares his story of the hunt here:

“I began bowhunting 20 years ago this season and have learned many hard lessons along the way. Although I had no history with this buck, the true hunt began on January 2nd, when I started seeking out new permission spots for the 2024 season. I knocked on countless doors, made phone calls and put boots on the ground all spring and summer, in hopes of locating a buck I wanted to pursue. By opening day, I still had not found him. I turned my focus to filling doe tags but continued to run cameras in many areas. On Tuesday 9/10 this buck and his bachelor group showed up and I knew it was game time! I was able to slip in around 4 PM on Wednesday 9/11 with my tree saddle. By the time I got settled in I was drenched in sweat but the wind was in my favor. The buck showed up a little after 6 PM and I was able to make a 35 yard double lung shot! He ran about 20 yards, looked around for a bit and toppled over. He ended up getting back on his feet and traveling another 50 yards before giving it up. I feel extremely blessed to harvest such a handsome buck in full velvet! He will provide venison for my family of four and the wall mount will preserve the memory of a perfect hunt. I’m so thankful to God for creating such beautiful creatures for us to enjoy and for blessing me with the ability to walk, climb and draw a back a bow. I’m also very thankful for my wife’s understanding of the pursuit and for close friends who enjoy chasing these animals as much as I do. I hope and pray that I can continue to pursue whitetails for another 20 years!!” –Isaac Niemitalo
