Spears killed Stokes County 9-point in full velvet
Jordan Spears of Tobaccoville, NC killed a 9-point buck in full velvet during a hunt in Stokes County, NC on Aug. 22, 2026.
Spears was then selected as the winner of Carolina Sportsman’s August Bag-A-Buck Contest.
She shot the buck with a Ruger American .308 during the evening hunt, while sitting on the ground from 200 yards away.
“My husband and I hunt on our family’s lease, and we went for the two-day velvet season to our box that sits on the ground,” she said.
Slow start gets exciting
The hunt started slowly, but took an exciting turn after a couple of hours.
“After about two hours of sitting, a doe and her fawn came out to eat. The buck was about 10 minutes behind, at 200 yards,” she said.
The buck offered her a clean shot, and Spears took full advantage of it.
“It stood completely sideways. I took a clean shoulder shot,” she said. “The buck ran 40 yards toward us and dropped. With an orange sunset behind him, it was a dream hunt.”
