Oak Island Recreation Dept. offering king mackerel fishing seminar

Learn all about king mackerel fishing on Sept. 18 at the King Mackerel Fishing Seminar presented by the Oak Island Parks and Recreation Dept.

Capt. Jerry Dilsaver will be featured speaker at Sept. 18 event

King mackerel fishermen wanting to boost their catches of the big mackerel should consider attending the King Mackerel Fishing Seminar presented by the Oak Island Parks and Recreation Department on the evening of Sept. 18, 2018. The seminar will feature three hours of information and tips for catching large king mackerel and will be tailored to assist participants improve their success in the upcoming US Open King Mackerel Tournament presented by the Southport-Oak Island Chamber of Commerce on Oct. 4 to 6.

Capt. Jerry Dilsaver, a Southport native, will be the featured speaker. Dilsaver’s credentials include a Southern Kingfish Association National Championship, a US Anglers Association Angler of the Year award and being a member of the Southern Kingfish Association Hall of Fame. He has successfully competed in king mackerel tournaments from Virginia through the Gulf of Mexico.

The evening will begin with an overview of king mackerel, their feeding habits and locations. Then it will move on to highlight rods and reels, lines, terminal tackle, rigs, gaffing, handling fish, plus trolling spreads, preferred baits, locating and catching live baits, cast nets, throwing cast nets and more. Dilsaver is well known as an innovator in the sport and will cover tactics specifically for targeting larger kings, plus numerous tips that make fishing easier and more productive.

The evening should prove to be entertaining as well as informative. Dilsaver grew up in Southport and has fished across the Southeastern US and Gulf Coasts, successfully competing on the Southern Kingfish Association, US Anglers Association and FLW kingfish tours. His presentation includes a healthy dose of coastal humor and interesting fishing tales. Most importantly, Dilsaver loves the sport and enjoys helping  fishermen improve their fishing knowledge and skills.

Aspiring king mackerel tournament anglers and fishermen wanting to catch larger king mackerel should make plans to attend this seminar. Dilsaver will share tips, techniques, tactics, years of knowledge and a lot of personal insight with the participants. The Oak Island Recreation Department promises it will be entertaining and chock full of tips on how to make your king mackerel fishing more productive and more fun. The seminar is scheduled two weeks prior to the tournament to allow fishermen time to incorporate the new ideas into their fishing and give them a try.

The 2018 Oak Island King Mackerel Fishing Seminar will be held Tuesday evening, September 18, at the Oak Island Recreation Center, 3003 E. Oak Island Drive, Oak Island, N.C. The seminar will begin at 6:30 P.M. and should conclude by 9:30 P.M. In addition to the sessions, each participant will receive a goodie bag with samples and there will be door prize drawings. Sandwiches and pizza are included.
