Kershaw County is well known as a rural county with plenty of longleaf pines and black jack oaks, but the North Central High School shooting team is aiming to bring the shooting sports to the attention of the county.Recognized as the first public school in South Carolina to form a clay target shooting team, the entire team came to the statehouse on March 3 to be presented with a framed resolution of support.

“Exposure to the outdoor sports should be a key component to raising physically and spiritually healthy young people,” said Sen. Vincent Sheheen, who represents Kershaw County. “I am so proud of what the partnership at North Central High School is achieving with these outstanding young shooters.”

The shooting program receives financial support from Leonard Price, landowner adjacent to the high school.

“I am especially thankful for the contributions of my good friend and great outdoorsman, Leonard Price, in helping make this project a reality,” Sheheen said.

North Central’s shooting team was formed in early 2010, and since then several other public schools have followed their model for success. Currently there are 34 teams enrolled in the South Carolina Youth Shooting Foundation. The Scholastic Clay Target Program partnered with the SCYSF for a shooting event in 2011 at the Live Oaks facility in the Midlands, where over 200 students participated.

“We love to tell the story of student athletes getting involved in the outdoors,” said Rep. Laurie Slade Funderburk, vice-chair of the South Carolina House Sportsman’s Caucus. “We are proud of these Kershaw County youth for their leadership to help promote the shooting sports.”
