Whitetail deer can be found in all 46 of South Carolina’s counties, but the hunting in some areas is obviously better than others. The August issue of South Carolina Sportsman aims to tell readers which areas are the best, and how the state’s deer herd is faring, with the annual statewide deer forecast.

A plus is a report on where the state’s biggest trophy bucks were killed in the 2010 season, according to the numbers produced by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources’ antler-scoring sessions.

Also, if you’re a fisherman who has never been to Murrell’s Inlet, this month’s Saltwater Series map/GPS feature can get you off on the right foot if you plan to sample the area’s flounder, redfish and trout.

Summer brings shark-fishing to the forefront, and there’s no place better than Bulls Bay, where a fisherman stands a chance of hooking anything from foot-long inshore shark to a 100-pound beast – without pulling up your anchor.

Lake Wateree is one of South Carolina’s best crappie fisheries, and as the mercury gets ready to bust out the top of the thermometer, it might be a good idea to sample the lake’s after-dark fishing action. South Carolina Sportsman will show you how.

Blue catfish are the crown prince of the Santee Cooper lakes, and they will provide plenty of action for fishermen, even in the heat of the summer. A feature on the ins and outs of catching big Lake Moultrie blues is included in the August issue.

You can download a digital copy of the magazine right to your computer, tablet or smartphone. Or you can pick one up from any of the newsstands around the state.
