Lake Jocassee clean-up slated for July 30

Hundreds of volunteers will gather at Lake Jocassee on July 30 to remove trash and debris in a collaborative effort that’s quickly showing how much local residents and recreation enthusiasts value the lake.

This clean-up event is the largest of its kind for Lake Jocassee.

Volunteers will disperse at 9 a.m. in teams to 11 land locations and nine scuba-dive locations to remove debris and beautify the lake.

Duke Energy and many other commercial and environmental organizations, including the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, which manages 33,000 acres of public lands around Lake Jocassee, are helping to sponsor the day’s activities.

A limited number of land volunteers are still needed. More information on the event can be found at http://www.jocasseecleanup.com/.

“As we’ve been organizing the event, I’ve seen many walks of life getting together for a common purpose,” event coordinator Brandon Landmark said. “It has been inspiring to me how many people really appreciate this lake and what it has to offer the Upstate.”

In addition to Duke Energy’s Allan Boggs serving as one of the event coordinators, choosing to help sponsor the day was important to the company on multiple levels.

“Duke Energy’s hydroelectric operations in the area are certainly one reason to be involved, but even more so, our employees in the Upstate live and recreate here,” said Reggie King, area hydro manager. “This reflects the heart of our core values-to be involved in our community and help protect its natural resources.”

“This event is what South Carolina State Parks are all about: connecting people to the resources that we all have the responsibility to protect and preserve,” said Kevin Evans, Devils Fork State Park manager.
