Meeting is scheduled for Feb. 16 in Morganton to get public input on managing six tracts within the Pisgah Game Lands
The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is holding a public meeting on Feb. 16 in Morganton to seek input on developing a management plan for six state-owned tracts on the Commission’s Pisgah Game Land in western North Carolina.
The meeting will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. It will be held at the Foothills Higher Education Center, 2128 South Sterling St.
Commission staff will use public input from the meeting to help guide management and user activities on the Black Bear (McDowell County), Linville River (Burke County), Little Table Rock Mountain/Rose Creek (Avery and Mitchell counties), Lutz (Caldwell County) and Roaring Creek (Avery County) tracts for the next 10 years.
The six tracts are mostly forested and populated with game species including whitetail deer, wild turkey, squirrel, ruffed grouse and trout. In addition to hunting and fishing, hiking is a popular activity on these properties.
If the meeting is postponed due to bad weather, it will be rescheduled for Feb. 19 at the same time and location. The Commission will post on its website, www.ncwildlife.org, on Feb. 16 if the meeting is cancelled. The agency also will post a cancellation notice on its Facebook page and Twitter account if the meeting is cancelled.
“We are encouraging everyone who has an interest in these tracts to attend the meeting to provide input on the management of the tracts,” said biologist Gordon Warburton. “We hope to hear from hunters and anglers, but also from wildlife watchers, photographers, birders and others who use or have an interest in using these lands.”
The Commission also will accept comments and suggestions from people who cannot attend the meeting. Beginning Feb. 16, people can submit comments regarding this game land management plan at www.ncwildlife.org. Click on “Comment on Game Land Plans” in the scrolling icons at the bottom of the homepage. E-mailed comments will be accepted anytime to gamelandplan@ncwildlife.org. Type “Pisgah” in the subject line and identify the tract your comment pertains to unless the comment is general in nature.
Meeting attendees should note that the proposed shooting range on the Linville River Tract will not be discussed at this meeting. A separate public meeting regarding the proposed shooting range is scheduled for Feb. 18. Attendees also should note that management of U.S. Forest Service property will not be discussed at this meeting.
