23rd Annual Beach Sweep/River Sweep set for Sept. 17

Volunteers are needed to keep the state's lakes, rivers and beaches clean so anglers can enjoy their time on the water.

Rivers, lakes, beaches around state to be cleaned, SCDNR says.

The 23rd annual Beach Sweep/River Sweep is scheduled for Sept. 17 from 9 a.m. until noon in the state’s larges one-day litter cleanup effort of beaches, marshes, swamps, streams, and lakes, the South Crarolina Department of Natural Resources said.

The agency is once again partnering with South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium to organize the statewide event to be held in conjunction with the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup.

Anyone can participate: individuals, families, schools, youth groups, civic and conservation clubs or businesses. All necessary supplies are provided.

Last year nearly 4,700 volunteers removed 24 tons of litter from the state’s beaches and waterways. In its 22-year history, 1,072 tons of litter have been collected and, when possible, recycled.

There are locations in 34 counties, and volunteers are needed for each one.
