September is a month for beginnings across the Palmetto State, and South Carolina Sportsman is there, right at the starting line, for sportsmen.

If you are planning an early-season dove hunt, South Carolina Sportsman can show you how to do it the right way, based on the advice of several Upstate experts.

Deer hunters can learn how “ancient” archery equipment is still up to the task when it comes to tagging out a whitetail, and the statewide WMA preview lists the particulars on the best public-land hunting in South Carolina for deer, waterfowl and small-game.

And in case all this info gets you in range of a nice buck, experts explain how to place your shot to make sure he drops on the spot.

Fishermen can learn local hot spots in the area where the Folly, Kiawah and Stono rivers meet south of Charleston, and about how to battle the rugged “reef donkeys” – amberjacks – that live around inshore reefs. Lastly, a feature on trout fishing the Chattooga River should get you off the beaten path – at least, that’s the idea.
