Creel limit and size limit will change if passed into law
South Carolina’s Fish, Game, and Forestry Committee passed a bill they say will improve the sustainability of redfish, one of the state’s most prized gamefish species.
The move comes at the request of SCDNR, which does not have the power to change laws, but often suggests changes to the state’s lawmakers.
Numerous fishing guides and conservation groups are also onboard with the change.
SCDNR determined the need for the change based on two stock assessments, one performed in 2024 by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, and the other by SCDNR in 2025.
The bill, if made into law, will cut the current 2-redfish per person daily limit down to one fish. The bill also seeks to adjust the slot limit to 18-25 inches, and to require the use of non-offest, non-stainless hooks when using live bait with hook size of 4/0 or larger.
Capt. Garrett Lacy of Charleston Fishing Adventures (843-478-8216) is one of numerous area fishing guides in favor of the bill.
“This bill cuts the limit, but it also adjusts the slot. Anglers will still be able to put meat on the table while also increasing conservation on red drum,” he said.
The bill goes to the full senate next, where it is expected to pass.
