S.C. State Parks announce reopening plans

S.C. State Parks
South Carolina's state parks will begin reopening in phases beginning May 1.

S.C. State Parks will reopen in phases

Phase One: Day Use

State Parks will be open on a limited basis beginning May 1. Hours of operations and capacities will be limited until further notice. Carrying capacity at each State Park will be adjusted below normal capacity to facilitate social distancing. The State Parks website will post these capacities. They’ll also show this information at each park’s entrance. State Parks Visitor Centers will open on May 11 and retail stores/spaces will open on May 15

Also, until further notice, playgrounds, group rental facilities, tours and programs (including Hunting Island Lighthouse) will remain closed.

Phase Two: Overnight Accommodations

On March 24, SCPRT cancelled existing reservations for overnight accommodations through April 30, 2020 and implemented a freeze on new reservations until May 7, 2020. SCPRT currently has pre-existing camping and cabin reservations beginning May 1. SCPRT will extend the freeze on new reservations through May 11 to allow sufficient time to re-hire staff and implement routines with new cleaning protocols for campground comfort stations, motel rooms, camper cabins and traditional cabins.

State Parks’ Commitment to South Carolina Citizens

South Carolina’s State Park Service remains committed to providing service to our state’s citizens and protecting our state’s natural, cultural and human resources. While the re-opening of State Parks will provide much-needed outlets for the citizens of South Carolina to engage in outdoor recreation, SCPRT remains highly aware of the ongoing public health threat posed by COVID-19. SCPRT will continuously monitor visitor usage and adjust visitor services as needed to ensure compliance with the guidance provided by SCDHEC and the CDC.
