Failure to yield right of way contributed to deadly accident
The SCDNR’s investigation into the April 21 Lake Murray boating accident that resulted in the death of 32-year-old Danny Phillips and 28-year-old Shawn Lanier has been concluded. The agency found that Phillips was responsible for the crash, as his 16-foot Stratos bass boat collided with a 32-foot Intrepid driven by Bruce Dyer.
Phillips failed to yield right of way to Dyer’s boat, said the report.
The report also said high levels of marijuana were found in Phillips’ system.
On the night of the accident, Dyer’s 32-foot boat crashed into the smaller boat, but Dyer was not at fault because it was Phillips’ responsibility to give way to Dyer under the circumstances the two boats were in. The two boats crashed bow-to-bow, essentially a head-on collision.
Dyer showed no signs of impairment during SCDNR’s on-the-scene investigation.
