SCDNR hiring summer wildlife interns

12-14 positions available for internship program

Location: Various locations in SC. Some potential sites are: Bonneau, Clemson, Columbia, Florence, Georgetown, Green Pond, and McClellanville, SC. Lodging may be available at some sites. Lodging will not be available at all sites. No pets are allowed in housing areas.

Compensation: Interns will be paid $12/hour and will work 40 hours/week. Employees will have access to a vehicle to be used for work-related travel ONLY. A personal vehicle will be required for commuting and personal transportation.

Duration: 12 weeks, mid-May to mid-August (start/end dates somewhat flexible) 2022.

Description: The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) seeks motivated individuals to participate in a 12-week wildlife management summer internship in the state. These internships are designed to give real-world experience in the wildlife management field.

Interns will perform a variety of duties

The intern will assist SCDNR Wildlife Management Area and Heritage Preserve staff with wildlife management duties. These duties may include, but are not limited to, planting food plots and dove fields, herbicide application, prescribed burning, wildlife, and plant surveys (i.e., black bears, wild turkeys, fox squirrels, red-cockaded woodpeckers, rare plants), feral hog trapping, dove banding, GPS/GIS mapping projects, equipment setup and maintenance, and property maintenance (gates, signs, clean-up, etc.). Not all duties will be performed at all locations.

Qualifications: Applicants must be working toward a degree in wildlife management or a closely related field. Recently graduated individuals seeking field experience are also encouraged to apply. Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license with a good driving record. They will also need the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, and to work independently with little supervision.

Work often will be at remote sites and in harsh conditions. Additionally, knowledge of wildlife biology and management practices is helpful.
