Habitat is everything for grouse

Grouse flourish in clear cuts and other thick, successional growth in the mountains. WIthout habitat, there will be no grouse.

Habitat continues to be the No. 1 concern with grouse populations. Like many animals, ruffed grouse flourish in regenerated growth. Clearcuts that have regenerated provide food and cover to grouse.

The SCDNR publishes a brochure — www.dnr.sc.gov/wildlife/publications/pdf/grouse.pdf — that helps land owners understand the importance of habitat for grouse and the need for more habitat. It is hoped that the state will incorporate some of this in its management practices of these state owned lands.
